Kaki’s Beyond the Chair Story

Kaki K. is one of Beyond The Chair’s younger clients. He has an incomplete spinal cord injury at the C-5/C-6 level, which was the result of a terrible car accident he was in when he was younger. After a severe accident such as this, some individuals might lose their will power and dedication, but Kaki doesn’t let his injury hold him back.

Kaki has been injured for almost three years now and he still continues to stay strong minded and dedicated. He tries to make the best out of every situation he encounters. Kaki is active inside and outside of Beyond The Chair, he is a full-time student at a local college and a full-time client at BTC. Kaki exercises at BTC twice a week for an hour and a half. During his workout sessions he strives for nothing but greatness. Having a spinal cord injury often leads to secondary complications in one’s body. In Kaki’s case, he has developed heterotopic ossification in his hip and right knee. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the presence of bone in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist. Since weight-bearing and passive or active range of motion contributes to breaking down HO in the body it’s important for individuals with HO to stand regularly and stay mobile. The EasyStand Glider is the perfect fit for breaking down HO in Kaki’s hip and right knee. By using the Glider Kaki is able to benefit from weight bearing in his lower extremities and at the same time he is able to stay mobile by moving all four extremities in a rhythmic movement.

The EasyStand Glider continues to assist and help with all our clients here at Beyond The Chair, in Kaki’s case it has helped him break down some of the HO that has been built up in his hip and right knee.
